Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation

Welcome to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) web page.  The Department of HPER is a resourceful department that provides an array of services, educational experiences, programs, and activities for students, staff, faculty and the community.  The department embraces its fundamental obligation as an effective entity in the realization of the goals of the College of Education and Human Development and the mission of Jackson State University in “Challenging Minds and Changing Lives.”

In retrospect, HPER is committed to providing programs and services to promote and support the health, physical fitness, social, and wellness needs of students enrolled at the University.  The HPER department comprises several progressive educational programs and services, supported by outstanding faculty.  The programs and services are:

A Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education (concentrations in Physical and Health Education) - The program curriculum and pedagogical content assure that candidates demonstrate critical analysis and synthesis of the subject.  The program provides career opportunities that prepare para professionals, teachers, coaches, trainers and school personnel for professional services in the areas of health, physical education and recreation.

A Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education (concentration in Therapeutic Recreation and Recreation Administration) - prepares non-teaching careers through concentration areas of Recreation Administration and Therapeutic Recreation.  The Recreation Administration and Therapeutic Recreation programs provide supportive coursework and experiences that afford student majors developmental opportunities that enhance knowledge and promote opportunities for employment in health care settings, community-based programs, correctional facilities, public, private and non-profit agencies.
